Neuromodulator Q&A

What is a Neuromodulator?

Botox® is only one of the four neuromodulating treatments (also known as neurotoxins) offered at Magnolia Dermatology.  Dr. Robare and her team also offer the neuromodulators Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®, which may produce faster results in some patients. Neuromodulators are injectable treatments that reduce muscle movement by interfering with the nerve signals between the brain and the muscles that cause facial movement. This prevents the skin on top of the muscle from creasing. Within days, the skin starts to relax and soften. The skin appears smoother and more youthful.

By targeting muscle movement, neuromodulators can also help prevent new wrinkles. This treatment is ideal for fine lines, as it can slow wrinkle formation.

Can neuromodulators treat all types of wrinkles?

Neuromodulators treat dynamic wrinkles or expression lines. Dynamic wrinkles develop from repeated muscle movement. They’re more likely to develop in the top one-third portion of the face than in the lower areas. The most popular  treatment areas include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines between the eyebrows
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Marionette lines

Since neuromodulators target muscle movement, your provider can use them to perform a nonsurgical brow lift and tighten necklines. Neuromodulators can also help relieve pain in the jaw’s masseter muscles and slim their appearance for a slimmer jawline.

Neuromodulators cannot treat static wrinkles, which develop from volume loss. As your skin ages, it starts to hollow and sag without its youthful volume. By restoring this lost volume, dermal fillers can smooth the appearance of static wrinkles. Dr. Robare offers a wide range of dermal fillers for her patients.

What can I expect from neuromodulator treatments?

These treatments only take a few minutes to perform. Once Dr. Robare or Vannica maps out your treatment areas, they carefully perform your injections. A topical anesthetic is available to numb your skin during treatment upon request, but the procedure shouldn’t feel overly painful.

What should I expect after treatment?

Results results take about seven to fourteen days to finalize, but you may see visible skin improvements within a couple of days of your procedure.

For most patients, the results of neuromodulators can be enjoyed for about 3 months. Daxxify® is different because it lasts an average of 2 months longer than the other neuromodulators. Once the medication gradually fades, you can return to the clinic for maintenance treatments. Combining your treatment with dermal fillers, chemical peels, and medical-grade skin care products can enhance and extend your results.
